The Philokalia: On the Eight Vices: On Pride - La Filocalía: Sobre los ocho vicios: sobre el orgullo

“When we have attained some degree of holiness we should always repeat to ourselves the words of the Apostle: “Yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me’ (1 Cor. 15:10), as well as what was said by the Lord: ‘Without Me you can do nothing’ (John 15:5). We should also bear in mind what the prophet said: ‘Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it’ (Ps. 127:1), and finally: ‘It does not depend on-man’s will or effort, but on God’s mercy’ (Rom. 9:16).

Even if someone is sedulous, serious and resolute, he cannot, so long as he is bound to flesh and blood, approach perfection except through the mercy and grace of Christ. James himself says that ‘every good gift is from above’ Jas. 1:17), while the Apostle Paul asks: ‘What do you have which you did not receive? Now if you received it, why do you boast, as if you had not received it?’ (1 Cor. 4:7). What right, then, has man to be proud as though he could achieve perfection through his own efforts?”

“Cuando hayamos alcanzado algún grado de santidad, siempre debemos repetirnos las palabras del Apóstol:“ Sin embargo, no yo, sino la gracia de Dios que fue conmigo ”(1 Cor. 15:10), así como lo que fue dijo el Señor: "Sin mí nada podéis hacer" (Juan 15: 5). También debemos tener en cuenta lo que dijo el profeta: 'Si el Señor no edifica la casa, en vano trabajan los que la edifican' (Sal. 127: 1), y finalmente: 'No depende de la voluntad ni del esfuerzo del hombre, sino de la misericordia de Dios ”(Rom. 9:16). 

 Incluso si alguien es asiduo, serio y resuelto, no puede, mientras esté ligado a la carne y la sangre, acercarse a la perfección si no es por la misericordia y la gracia de Cristo. El mismo James dice que "todo buen regalo viene de arriba" Jas. 1:17), mientras que el apóstol Pablo pregunta: '¿Qué tienes que no hayas recibido? Ahora bien, si lo recibiste, ¿por qué te jactas como si no lo hubieras recibido? ”(1 Cor. 4: 7). Entonces, ¿qué derecho tiene el hombre a enorgullecerse como si pudiera alcanzar la perfección a través de sus propios esfuerzos?
