Forgiveness Sunday - Domingo del Perdón

Forgiveness Sunday, also called Cheesefare Sunday, is the final day of pre-Lent. It is the Sunday after Meatfare Sunday and the Sunday before the Sunday of Orthodoxy.
 

Significance of the Day

On this last Sunday before Great Lent, the last day that traditionally Orthodox Christians eat dairy products until Easter, the Church remembers the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. God commanded them to fast from the fruit of a tree (Gen. 2:16), but they did not obey. In this way Adam and Eve and their descendants became heirs of death and corruption.

On Forgiveness Sunday many attend Forgiveness Vespers on the eve of Great Lent. They hear on the Lord's teaching about fasting and forgiveness and enter the season of the fast forgiving one another so that God will forgive them. If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your heavenly Father forgive you your trespasses (Matthew 6:14).

The Gospel reading of the day also gives advice on fasting. Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. (Matthew 6:16-18).
 

The Rite of Forgiveness

After the dismissal at Vespers, the priest stands beside the analogion, or before the ambon, and the faithful come up one by one and venerate the icon, after which each makes a prostration before the priest, saying, "Forgive me, a sinner." The priest also makes a prostration before each, saying, "God forgives. Forgive me." The person responds, "God forgives," and receives a blessing from the priest. Meanwhile the choir sings quietly the irmoi of the Paschal Canon, or else the Paschal Stichera. After receiving the priest's blessing, the faithful also ask forgiveness of each other.

El Domingo del Perdón, también llamado Domingo de Maslenitsa, es el último día de pre-Cuaresma. Es el domingo posterior al Domingo de la Carne y el domingo anterior al Domingo de la Ortodoxia. 

 

Significado del Día 

En este último domingo antes de la Gran Cuaresma, último día en que tradicionalmente los cristianos ortodoxos comen productos lácteos hasta Pascua, la Iglesia recuerda la expulsión de Adán y Eva del Paraíso. Dios les ordenó ayunar del fruto de un árbol (Gén. 2:16), pero no obedecieron. De esta manera Adán y Eva y sus descendientes se convirtieron en herederos de muerte y corrupción. 

El Domingo del Perdón muchos asisten a las Vísperas del Perdón en la víspera de la Gran Cuaresma. Escuchan la enseñanza del Señor sobre el ayuno y el perdón y entran en la temporada del ayuno perdonándose unos a otros para que Dios los perdone. Si perdonáis a los hombres sus ofensas, vuestro Padre celestial os perdonará a vosotros; pero si no perdonáis a los hombres sus ofensas, tampoco vuestro Padre celestial os perdonará vuestras ofensas (Mateo 6:14).

La lectura del Evangelio del día también da consejos sobre el ayuno. Además, cuando ayunéis, no seáis como los hipócritas, de rostro triste. Porque desfiguran sus rostros para que parezcan a los hombres que ayunan. De cierto os digo que ya tienen su recompensa. Pero tú, cuando ayunes, unge tu cabeza y lava tu rostro, para que no parezcas a los hombres que ayunas, sino a tu Padre que está en secreto; y vuestro Padre que ve en lo secreto os recompensará en público. (Mateo 6:16-18). 

 

El Rito del Perdón 

Después de la despedida en Vísperas, el sacerdote se coloca junto a la analogía, o ante el ambón, y los fieles se acercan uno por uno y veneran el icono, después de lo cual cada uno se postra ante el sacerdote, diciendo: "Perdóname, pecador. " El sacerdote también se postra ante cada uno, diciendo: "Dios perdona. Perdóname". La persona responde: "Dios perdona", y recibe una bendición del sacerdote. Mientras tanto, el coro canta en voz baja el irmoi del Canon Pascual, o bien la Pascual Stichera. Después de recibir la bendición del sacerdote, los fieles también se piden perdón unos a otros.
