Sunday of the Holy Cross - Domingo de la Santa Cruz

The Sunday of the Holy Cross is the Third Sunday of Great Lent, also called Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross. On this Sunday, services includes a special veneration of the Cross, which prepares the faithful for the commemoration of the Crucifixion during Holy Week and the holy Resurrection.


Themes  

Each of the Sundays of Great Lent has its own special theme. This Sunday's theme is that in the cross of Christ crucified lies both "the power of God and the wisdom of God" for those being saved (1 Cor 1:24). On this Sunday in the middle of the Lenten season, the cross stands in the middle of the church, not merely to remind the faithful of Christ's redemption and for them to keep the goal of their Lenten efforts, but also as a reminder: "He who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me" (Mt 10:38).
 

Historical Theme

The historical theme, as seen in the hymnology, is the victory and joy of the cross, not the suffering. The Church fathers equate the life-giving cross with the tree of life and plant it in the middle of the Lenten pilgrimage. It was the tree that was planted in Paradise; it is to remind the faithful of both Adam's bliss and how he was deprived from it.
 

Spiritual Theme

For the catechumens of the early church, and the faithful preparing for Pascha today, the spiritual theme starts to change from personal faith, and personal effort, to Christ. The Church teaches that it is Christ's cross that saves. One cannot take up his own cross and follow Christ unless one has Christ's cross which he took up to save mankind. Partaking of this tree, one will no longer die, but will be kept alive.

This is done to refresh, reassure and to encourage those participating in Great Lent. The Church equates the appearance of the cross at this time to the banners and symbols that precede the return of a victorious king. The Epistle reading is from Hebrews 4:14-5:6 and explains Christ's priesthood, and the Gospel lesson from Mark 8:34-9:1 ends with And He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power."
 

Hymns

As at the feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross on September 14, the Trisagion is replaced by the hymn: Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master, and Thy holy Resurrection we glorify. (Thrice) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen. And Thy holy Resurrection we glorify. Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master, and Thy holy Resurrection we glorify.

El Domingo de la Santa Cruz es el Tercer Domingo de la Gran Cuaresma, también llamado Domingo de la Veneración de la Cruz. En este domingo, los servicios incluyen una veneración especial de la Cruz, que prepara a los fieles para la conmemoración de la Crucifixión durante la Semana Santa y la Santa Resurrección. 

 

Temas 

Cada uno de los domingos de la Gran Cuaresma tiene su propio tema especial. El tema de este domingo es que en la cruz de Cristo crucificado yace "el poder de Dios y la sabiduría de Dios" para los que se salvan (1 Co 1:24). En este domingo en medio de la temporada de Cuaresma, la cruz se encuentra en medio de la iglesia, no solo para recordar a los fieles la redención de Cristo y para que mantengan la meta de sus esfuerzos de Cuaresma, sino también como un recordatorio: "Él el que no toma su cruz y me sigue, no es digno de mí ”(Mt 10, 38). 

 

Tema Histórico 

El tema histórico, como se ve en la himnología, es la victoria y la alegría de la cruz, no el sufrimiento. Los padres de la Iglesia equiparan la cruz vivificante con el árbol de la vida y lo plantan en medio de la peregrinación cuaresmal. Fue el árbol que se plantó en el paraíso; es para recordar a los fieles tanto la dicha de Adán como cómo fue privado de ella. 

 

Tema Espiritual 

Para los catecúmenos de la iglesia primitiva y los fieles que se preparan para la Pascua de hoy, el tema espiritual comienza a cambiar de la fe personal y el esfuerzo personal a Cristo. La Iglesia enseña que es la cruz de Cristo la que salva. Uno no puede tomar su propia cruz y seguir a Cristo a menos que tenga la cruz de Cristo que él tomó para salvar a la humanidad. Al participar de este árbol, uno ya no morirá, pero se mantendrá con vida. 

Esto se hace para refrescar, tranquilizar y animar a quienes participan en la Gran Cuaresma. La Iglesia equipara la aparición de la cruz en este momento con los estandartes y símbolos que preceden al regreso de un rey victorioso. La lectura de la epístola es de Hebreos 4: 14-5: 6 y explica el sacerdocio de Cristo, y la lección del Evangelio de Marcos 8: 34-9: 1 termina con Y les dijo: "De cierto os digo que hay algunos parados aquí que no gustarán la muerte hasta que vean el reino de Dios presente con poder."

 

Himnos 

Como en la fiesta de la Elevación de la Santa Cruz el 14 de septiembre, el Trisagion es reemplazado por el himno: Ante tu cruz nos postramos en adoración, oh Maestro, y glorificamos tu santa resurrección. (Tres veces) Gloria al Padre, al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, ahora y siempre, y por los siglos de los siglos. Amén. Y tu santa resurrección glorificamos.
