Conception of the Theotokos - Concepción de la Theotokos

The Conception of the Theotokos by Saint Anna is commemorated by the Orthodox Church on December 9.

 

St. Anna, the mother of the Virgin Mary, was the youngest daughter of the priest Nathan from Bethlehem, descended from the tribe of Levi. She married St. Joachim, who was a native of Galilee. For many years, St. Anna was childless and the couple suffered much reproach for her barrenness. When they were in Jerusalem to offer sacrifice to God, the High Priest, Issachar, upbraided Joachim, "You are not worthy to offer sacrifice with those childless hands." Both spouses gave themselves to fervent prayer, and the Archangel Gabriel announced to them separately that they would be the parents of a daughter who would bring blessings to the whole human race.

The Orthodox Church does not accept the heretical Papist teaching of the Immaculate Conception, but has also always believed that the Virgin Mary was, from her conception, filled with every Grace of the Holy Spirit in view of her calling as the Mother of Christ our God.

The Church also celebrates other saints who were sanctified in the womb of their mothers. St. John the Baptist is one example; St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is another.

The feast is not exactly nine months before the feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos (September 8) as it is in the West, but one day later. Many have taught this is to show that God alone is perfect.

Troparion (Tone 4) Today the bonds of barrenness are broken,God has heard the prayers of Joachim and Anna.He has promised them beyond all their hopes, To bear the Maiden of God by whom the Uncircumscribed One was born as mortal man, Who commanded an angel to cry to Her: Rejoice, O Full of Grace, the Lord is with You!

Kontakion (Tone 4) Today the universe rejoices, For Anna has conceived the Theotokos through God's dispensation, For she has brought forth the One who is to bear the Ineffable Word!

La Concepción de la Theotokos por Santa Ana es conmemorada por la Iglesia Ortodoxa el 9 de diciembre. Santa Ana, la madre de la Virgen María, era la hija menor del sacerdote Natán de Belén, descendiente de la tribu de Levi. Se casó con San Joaquín, que era nativo de Galilea. Durante muchos años, Santa Ana no tuvo hijos y la pareja sufrió muchos reproches por su esterilidad. Cuando estaban en Jerusalén para ofrecer sacrificios a Dios, el sumo sacerdote, Isacar, reprendió a Joaquín: "No eres digno de ofrecer sacrificios con esas manos sin hijos." Ambos esposos se entregaron a la oración ferviente y el Arcángel Gabriel les anunció por separado que serían los padres de una hija que traería bendiciones a toda la raza humana. 

La Iglesia Ortodoxa no acepta la herética enseñanza papista de la Inmaculada Concepción, pero también siempre ha creído que la Virgen María estaba, desde su concepción, llena de toda Gracia del Espíritu Santo en vista de su llamado como Madre de Cristo nuestro Dios. 

La Iglesia también celebra a otros santos que fueron santificados en el vientre de sus madres. San Juan Bautista es un ejemplo; San Nicolás el Taumaturgo es otro. La fiesta no es exactamente nueve meses antes de la fiesta de la Natividad de la Theotokos (8 de septiembre) como en Occidente, sino un día después. Muchos han enseñado que esto es para mostrar que solo Dios es perfecto.

Troparion (Tono 4) Hoy se rompen los lazos de la esterilidad, Dios ha escuchado las oraciones de Joaquín y Ana, les ha prometido más allá de todas sus esperanzas, Dar a luz a la Doncella de Dios, por quien nació el Incircunscrito como hombre mortal, quien mandó un ángel para clamarle: Alégrate, llena eres de gracia, el Señor está contigo. 

Kontakion (Tono 4) Hoy el universo se regocija, porque Ana ha concebido la Theotokos a través de la dispensación de Dios, ¡porque ha dado a luz a Aquel que debe llevar la Palabra Inefable!
