Nativity Epistle to the Western European and East Asian Diocese by St. John Maximovich 

«Oh, depth of the wealth and wisdom of God! Christ God lived in a grotto, the manger received You, the shepherds and the wise men worshipped Thee. 

The Son of God descended from the heavens, where the angels praise him with incessant songs, to this earth full of sorrows and afflictions. The King of Heaven appeared on earth to live with men. 

The same Creator and Maker of the world became man. The incorporeal, omnipresent and all-powerful God dressed in human flesh, took on a weak human body damaged by suffering. But at the same time he did not cease to be God almighty and the One who has everything in His power. 

His Divinity is not seen even by angels, unable to contemplate the fullness of His glory. But in the flesh it is visible to everyone, not only angels, but also sinful people and even animals.

He was born in a humble grotto to be accessible to everyone. He was born on earth in poverty and destitution to grant people eternal wealth. He is wrapped in swaddling clothes, the One who brought liberation and salvation for men bound by their sins and vices. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords lay down in a manger from which the animals eat. Where the food of beasts is found, now lies He who gives sinners His Body as food and His Blood as drink for the remission of sins and eternal life. 

He appeared as a weak child and escaped from Herod to be close to all the helpless, oppressed and persecuted. From His own birth “He had nowhere to lay His head” (St. Matthew 8; St. Luke 9:58), in order to be the hope and support of all the unfortunate.

Now the newborn bestows the eternal wealth and joy of His Heavenly Kingdom that surpasses all thought. On earth he grants peace to souls, strengthens good will and brings joy to those who adore, glorify and venerate him. 

Come all the faithful! Come let us rejoice in the Lord! Gather together tender infants and children, glorify His Divine Contemporary, Who said “let the children come to Me” (St. Luke 18; St. Mark 10:14), Who embraces you and lays His hands on you, blessing you. Glorify Him, teenagers and young people, hurry to recognize the Savior of the world together with the shepherds, announce His coming to everyone and praise Him! Virgins and women, rejoice with Mary, He who was born of a Virgin brought you bliss instead of sorrow, joy instead of affliction! All men, revere the born King, offer him your spiritual and material treasures together with the wise men! Bring him his strength and talents as a gift, give him of his inheritance to receive the eternal instead of the perishable, the heavenly instead of the earthly.

Those who live in poverty, offer him your patience and your benevolence; those who are in sickness and affliction, their sighs and tears He will dry up. With Joseph, the elder Simeon, and the prophetess Anna, glorify all the elders, since now your eyes see the peaceful Light and the glory to come. With the heavenly armies and the spirits of the righteous, let all men, all humanity, rejoice: “For our sake the Little Child and Eternal God has been born.” Christ is born!

Epístola de Navidad a la diócesis de Europa Occidental y de Asia Oriental de San Juan Maximovich

 

 «¡Oh, profundidad de la riqueza y sabiduría de Dios! Cristo Dios habitó en una gruta, el pesebre Te recibió, los pastores y los reyes magos Te adoraron».

El Hijo de Dios descendió desde los cielos, donde los ángeles lo alaban con cánticos incesantes, a esta tierra llena de penas y aflicciones. El Rey de los Cielos apareció en la tierra para vivir con los hombres.

El mismo Creador y Hacedor del mundo se hizo hombre. El Dios incorpóreo, omnipresente y todopoderoso se vistió de carne humana, tomó un cuerpo humano débil y dañado por los sufrimientos. Pero al mismo tiempo no dejó de ser Dios todopoderoso y Quien todo lo tiene en Su poder.

Su Divinidad no es vista ni siquiera por los ángeles, incapaces de contemplar la plenitud de Su gloria. Pero en la carne es visible para todos, no sólo los ángeles, sino también las personas pecadoras y hasta los animales.

Nació en una humilde gruta para ser accesible a todos. Nació en la tierra en la pobreza e indigencia para otorgar a las personas la eterna riqueza. Es arropado en pañales, Aquel que trajo liberación y salvación para los hombres atados por sus pecados y vicios. El Rey de Reyes y Señor de Señores se recostó en un pesebre de donde comen los animales. Allí donde se encuentra el alimento de las bestias, ahora yace Quien entrega a los pecadores Su Cuerpo como alimento y Su Sangre como bebida para la remisión de los pecados y la vida eterna.

Apareció como un débil niño y se escapó de Herodes para estar cerca de todos los desvalidos, oprimidos y perseguidos. Desde Su propio nacimiento “no tuvo donde reclinar Su cabeza” (San Mateo 8; San Lucas 9:58), para ser así esperanza y apoyo de todos los desdichados.

Ahora el recién nacido otorga la eterna riqueza y el regocijo de Su Reino Celestial que supera todo pensamiento. En la tierra concede paz a las almas, fortalece la buena voluntad y alegra a quienes lo adoran, lo glorifican y lo veneran.

¡Venid todos los fieles! ¡Venid regocijémonos en el Señor! Reuníos tiernos infantes y niños, glorificad a Su Divino Coetáneo, Quien dijo “dejad que los niños vengan a Mí” (San Lucas 18; San Marcos 10:14), Quien los abraza y pone Sus manos sobre vosotros bendiciéndolos. ¡Glorifíquenlo adolescentes y jóvenes, apresuraos a reconocer junto con los pastores al Salvador del mundo, anunciad a todos de Su venida y alabadlo! ¡Vírgenes y mujeres, regocijaos con María, Aquel que nació de una Virgen les trajo bienaventuranza en lugar de pena, regocijo en lugar de aflicción! ¡Hombres todos, reverenciad al Rey nacido, ofrendadle de sus tesoros espirituales y materiales junto con los reyes magos! Traedle en obsequio sus fuerzas y talentos, dadle de su heredad para recibir lo eterno en lugar de los perecedero, lo celestial en lugar de lo terrenal.

Aquellos que viven en la indigencia, ofrendadle su paciencia y su benevolencia; aquellos que están en la enfermedad y la aflicción, sus suspiros y lágrimas que Él secará. Con José, el anciano Simeón y la profetisa Ana, glorificadle todos los ancianos, ya que ahora vuestros ojos ven la Luz apacible y la gloria venidera. Con los ejércitos celestiales y los espíritus de los rectos, regocijémonos todos los hombres, la humanidad entera: “Por nuestra causa ha nacido el Pequeño Niño y Eterno Dios”. ¡Cristo ha nacido!
