The Holy Martyr Emilian of Silistria in Bulgaria was of Slavic origin and suffered for Christ during the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363). Julian wanted to restore the cult of the pagan gods in the Roman Empire and distributed a strong edict throughout all the regions condemning all Christians to death.
Dorostolum was a city located on the banks of the Danube River, in that city lived Saint Emilian, and it was governed by an official named Capitolinus. The Imperial edicts were read in the town square and the people of Dorostolum declared that there were no Christians there.
Saint Emilian was a slave to the city manager and was a secret Christian. Emboldened by the harsh edict, Saint Emilian entered the pagan temple unseen and smashed the idol statues with a hammer, knocked down the altar and the candle holders, and left the temple unseen. When the pagans discovered that the temple was in ruins, the mob of agitated people began to beat up a young man who was apparently a Christian and who happened to be in that area. Saint Emilian shouted out loud to them not to arrest that innocent man and he himself confessed to having been guilty of the destruction of the pagan temple.
Saint Emilian was arrested and brought to trial in front of Capitulinus and by his official order, Saint Emilian was mercilessly beaten for a long time and condemned to the burning fire where he did not perish, however, the flames burned many of the pagans who were at his side. surroundings. When the fire was extinguished, Saint Emilian lay down on the embers and with a prayer offered his spirit to the Lord. As time passed, a church was built in Constantinople in honor of the Holy Martyr Emilian and his relics were transferred to his church.
